Kiltmaking Workshop with Mary Tierney

Make a complete kilt in 4 – 5 sessions. Continue apprenticing if you wish!

 Jan 6, Jan 27, Feb 17 and March 9th – 9:30AM – 4PM. A 5th week will be added depending on schedules.

Nashua Senior Center, Temple Street, Nashua, NH.

Mary will buy your material and supply backing, straps and buckles. You can choose any tartan as long as it is in stock. You must also decide on the weight of the tartan.

$75.00 per class, payable one at a time. Material for your kilt will be ordered for you at a discount for $250 and buckles, interfacing will be $15.

Schedule

Class 1

• Learn to sew pleats. We will practice on scrap tartan.
• We will learn to set up your kilt, front apron, under apron and pleats.
• Begin sewing pleats on your personal kilt.
• Baste pleats for pressing.
• Homework: finish sewing pleats on kilt.

Class 2

• Review pleats. Make corrections if needed.
• Prepare kilt for lining.
  • Finish both aprons.
  • Turn up, pleats.
  • Baste pleats on inside at hips.
  • Cut out pleats.
  • Prepare belt loops and buckles.
  • Make buttonhole in pleats for strap.

Class 3

• Review pleats and aprons. Make any corrections.
• Sew black lining to linen.
• Place and sew linen to underside of cut out pleats.
• Pin linen with black lining to aprons.
• Attach waistband. Press

Class 4

• Fold over waistband and sew.
• Attach black lining for back of kilt.
• Sew on straps and Buckles.
• Pin all black lining and sew.
• Baste pleats for pressing.
• Press finished kilt.

Class 5

• Finish anything not completed on kilts.
• Kilt maintenance and repair class.
